Faith and Politics - The Hon Kristina Keneally
Eremos Institute has a long history of inviting conversation about complex issues of faith and meaning in contemporary society. ‘What in the World is Going on?’ provides a forum during 2017 to explore confronting aspects of world events.
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally.
Ms Keneally recalls questions to her about her faith during her tenure as a parliamentarian, “Journalists asked me a couple of a dozen times ‘How much does your faith influence your political decisions?’ On each occasion I felt like rolling my eyes; by the end of my career, I probably started to do so visibly. Somewhere along the line I decided the best response to a silly question was an equally nonsensical answer: “37%,” I’d confidently reply and enjoy the poor journo’s confusion and momentary silence.”
Ms Keneally will speak from her own experience about how faith influences political decisions. As a theologian and a former politician she posits that no sensible solution to some of the most vexed societal questions – whether on national security or marriage equality – can be derived and resolved without understanding and respecting the religious dimensions of human actions.
Ms Keneally will consider how this understanding of the religious dimension challenges those who govern as well those who are governed and the consequences of the misuse or misunderstanding of the religious dimension.
