In May 1982 the original vision was fleshed out and Eremos was launched; later in the year the first “Eremos Newsletter” was published. We’d like you to celebrate with us and join the Eremos community.

The founding aims, which included the deepening of Christians’ experience of their faith and helping them to understand how their faith can relate to and contribute to Australian society, were within the first decade broadened to include appreciation of other faith traditions and spiritual explorations.

These aims, particularly nourishing our spirituality in the Australian context and dialogue with other faiths, are still very relevant today in our world rich in religious and spiritual diversity yet deeply conflicted.

Stories are made to be shared

Eremos offers a quality magazine and resources, events and retreats to feed the soul, stimulate the mind, inspire the heart and enable conversation about things that matter deeply.

‘Eremos’ is Greek for ‘wilderness’ or ‘desert place’.

The desert is a major source of spiritual inspiration for many spiritual writers through the ages. It is in entering the ‘wilderness’ or ‘desert’ we discover what is most essential and true.

Eremos provides a forum and support for individuals and groups to explore, express and deepen their spirituality in a contemporary Australian context.
From the beginning Eremos has recognised that Australian spirituality is often expressed through our writers and artists.

The quarterly EREMOS magazine is the main ‘meeting ground’ for our members.

It offers fresh insights, evocative challenges and encouragement to persevere in the journey of spiritual awareness within a contemporary Australian context. It contains articles, poetry, graphics, news, reviews and networking information.

You will find honest stories in its pages. You will find articles on ecological concerns, contributions from those passionate about justice issues of inequity and marginalisation, writers delving into the paradoxical nature of the Christian faith, perhaps struggling with doubts and unbelief or coming to terms with the failures and legacies of Christendom.  You will find writers who hold that Jesus remains a paradigm of inclusive leadership for these times while others inspire us through sharing how their spiritual traditions and leaders address universal human challenges and the relationship with the divine.

Celebrate Eremos’ 35th anniversary year with us by becoming a member in the month of August at a reduced subscription rate.
