Celebrating 40 Years

There was much to acknowledge and remember as Eremos reflected on its 40 years in an online celebration that took place on 5 June, 2022. This event considered Australian spirituality and spiritual practice over the lifetime of Eremos and also opened up conversations about what is emerging.

We explored:

  • ‘What was the hunger or yearning in people/communities that led to the birth of Eremos and how is that being expressed today?
  • What is emerging and what is changing in Australian spirituality and spiritual practice?’

The celebration featured a panel hosted by Meredith Lake, host of Soul Search on ABC Radio National. Meredith interviewed three panel members: Don Meadows, Benjamin Oh, and Celia Kemp. Attendees had the opportunity to share perspectives with one another in small groups.

During the event, the following two images were shared. They had been created from participants' reflections about Eremos.

Bethany South offered a reading from Exodus 3:14, Moses and the Burning Bush, adding the following quote from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks:

When Moses at the burning bush says to God, “Who are you?” God says to him three words: “Hayah asher hayah”. And these words are mistranslated in English as, “ I am that which I am”. But in Hebrew, it means, “I will be who or how or where I will be”, meaning, don’t think you can predict me. I am a God who is going to surprise you.

The conversation opened the door for further discussion about the future for Eremos and Australian spirituality. Bethany concluded the event with a reading of  the poem "Welcoming the Future" by Noel Davis and Trish DeLaney, from the poetry collection Campfire of the Heart.
